Summer Grunge — FOTD

I don’t know what got in to me today but I decided I wanted to do a Summer grunge look… Grunge makeup is tired looking, smokey, smudgey, messy, and uneven. I typically do polished looks so I wanted to go outside my box. I think it turned out pretty good!

I realized after posting this that I look somewhat cross eyed in the second picture… oops 🙂

Drugstore Pin-up Look — FOTD

Pin-up makeup is definitely one of my favorite looks… it’s so classic and feminine! I decided I wanted to use drugstore products because I know we’ve all been on a tight budget from time to time! I did have to cheat with just one item… I don’t own a drugstore bronzer unfortunately!

To be honest, I don’t own much drugstore makeup — so I had to get creative! Hope you like it!

Tarte Amazonian Clay Matte Bronzer in Park Ave Princess — Mini Review, Pictures & Swatches

I’m going make this review short and sweet! Well… not too sweet because I’m definitely NOT in love with this bronzer.

Tarte’s description:

“Product Performance: This fragrance free, talc free powder bronzer delivers sunkissed radiance in a lightweight finish without clogging your pores. It blends and builds effortlessly to your desired level of natural-looking bronze and its high sheen compact is perfect for achieving an on-the-go glow. Plus if you’re looking to define your cheekbones and jaw line, this bronzer also works as a contour powder because it’s the perfect natural matte shade to add depth and it effortlessly blends.”

In my humble opinion this bronzer is way too orange to be used as a contour powder. In fact, it is way too orange to work as a decent bronzer on fair skin… take a look at the swatches below!

PROS
Adorable packaging
Long wear — about 10 hours
Matte

CONS
Too orange
Applies somewhat cakey

Bronzer is a funny thing — on one gal it will look gorgeous and natural, then orange and artificial on another. This product did not work for me, but I’ve heard others rave about it. I much prefer Benefit’s Hoola Bronzer and recommend it to ladies with fair and light skin!

I may be selling this in an up coming blog sale, so keep an eye out for that if you are interested!

Makeup DON’TS!!!!!

What better to do on this lovely Sunday morning?

Lately I’ve seen a couple makeup pet peeve videos on YouTube and I thought it would be fun to do my own version!  This was done for laughs, so don’t be offended if any apply to you!

I had a little epiphany this morning while applying this gorgeous masterpiece… about 90% of my makeup “don’ts” were/are trends taken to the extreme — i.e. full brows, Kim K under eye highlight, etc.

Please disregard my messy hair… I didn’t think it was necessary to style it with a face full of makeup like that!  Anywho, I hope you enjoy!!

1. Foundation that is too dark — Need I elaborate?

2. Using bronzer all over your face — Sorry Jersey girls!

3. Concealer that is too light on blemishes —  This will only highlight the problem. Try using a shade the same color or slightly darker than your skin.

4. An extremely light concealer under your eyes (Kim Kardashian highlight) — Even when done correctly I’m not a fan of this. I think in ten years people will look back and say, “What was I thinking?!”

5. Unblended, overly dramatic contouring. — Leave crazy contouring up to drag queens.

6. Blush applied only to the “apples” of your cheeks — Unless you plan on frequenting children’s birthday parties.

7. Drawing on a fake mole — Your only excuse would be dressing up as Marilyn Monroe for Halloween, otherwise please avoid this at all costs!

8. Very uneven eyebrows — eyebrows are never completely symmetrical in nature, but at least attempt to make them look like they belong on the same human.

9. “Scouse brows” — This is a term used in the UK, but basically it means crazy overdrawn eyebrows.

10. Overly arched/extended brows — put down the eyebrow pencil… and walk away slowly…

11. Liquid liner on the bottom lash line — I can’t imagine what would make someone think that this looks nice, but I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t!

12. Eye liner applied ONLY to the bottom lash line — this is typically a middle schooler rookie mistake, but it looks horrid at any age.

13. Haphazardly applied false lashes — unless you’re going for a “I just smoked crack” kind of look.

14. False bottom lashes — leave this up to editorial photo shoots, I beg you!

15. Overly frosty brow bone highlight — this looks like something straight out of the 80’s, and NOT in a good way!

16. Bright, unblended, heinous, two toned eyeshadow — another trend that has gone to the dark side…

17. Eyeshadow fallout —  this is what man created makeup wipes for!

18. Concealer lips — this is NEVER a good look… EVER!

19. Brown lip liner — the 90’s called and they want their lip liner back!

20. Making the duckface — I know this isn’t makeup, but it needs to stop asap!

What are your makeup pet peeves?

My Makeup Transformation!

I read a post yesterday on Hannah’s blog that I found really inspiring — a no makeup FOTD! I must admit that I’ve been a little camera shy lately, and before yesterday I would have never even dreamed of  posting a picture of me completely bare faced on my blog! But then I thought, why the hell not?

Some ladies look absolutely stunning without makeup and others look like a completely different person… I am definitely the latter, but I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. If you are fair like I am, with blonde eyelashes and thin eyebrows, then you too know the power of makeup!

I was going to wait a bit for my skin to clear up to do this post, but then I realized that would defeat the purpose. This is me baby… the good and the bad. I hope we can all start to love ourselves a little bit more everyday — with and without makeup!

Click the pictures to enlarge — you can look at them more like a slideshow this way!

BARE FACE

FOUNDATION

MAC Studio Fix Fluid in NC15

Sigma F80

This foundation is very pale and my face doesn’t match the rest of the body — but I’ll fix that later! 🙂

CONCEALER

Maybelline Under Eye Concealer Dark Circle Eraser in Fair

Although I continue to use this product, I’m not completely in love with it…

EYEBROWS

Anastasia Brow Wiz in Ash Blonde
Maybelline Eyebrow Pencil in Blonde
MAC Omega Eyeshadow

MAC 266

I think this step is one of the most transformative… eyebrows are soooooo important! I envy all you gals with full brows!

I have been growing mine out for over 7 months and this is as good as they are getting. They are shaped very differently from one another, so I do the best I can to make them match and then move on. Sisters, not twins <3

EYESHADOW

MAC Painterly Paint Pot
MAC Naked Lunch — lid
MAC Malt — crease
MAC Vanilla — highlight

MAC 239
MAC 217

I wanted to go for an everyday look and this has been one of my favorites lately.

EYELINER

Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Liner in Black

MAC 210

Eyeliner makes such a huge impact on a look, but it is definitely the most time consuming — at least it is for me.

MASCARA

Cover Girl Lash Blast Volume in Brown

This is probably the last time I will be using this mascara until I repurchase it…  and sorry the picture is a bit fuzzy.

BRONZER

Benefit Hoola Bronzer

Real Techniques Blush Brush

I know this may look like a lot but it helps my face match the rest of my body… I wear SPF50 on my face when I’m outside so there is about a 2-3 shade difference I have to account for.

BLUSH

Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Dollface

MAC 168

Sorry the lighting keeps changing… the sun kept peeking out from behind the clouds.

LIPS — LOOK COMPLETE!

MAC Angel Lipstick
Merle Norman Lipgoss in Gumdrop

I just thought it would be fun to show to the progression and how makeup transforms, step by step… hope you enjoyed!

What step in your makeup regimen makes the biggest difference?

Five Minute Makeup

I can feel my teeth chattering just by the thought of finishing my makeup in five minutes or less. I am one of those girls that either has a full face of makeup on or nothing at all. It’s very hard for me to find some kind of middle ground — especially in 5 freaking minutes!

But I’ve turned a new leaf and decided that it’s not necessary to look like a drag queen every time I put my face on… of course I’m exaggerating a bit, but you get the idea! Today I’m going to show you my go to products for a quick and easy 5 minute makeup!

A bit of a disclaimer before I get into it… on a typical day my eyebrows take at least 5-10 minutes because they are so sparse. Unless you have naturally thin eyebrows like myself, it will be hard to understand why that is necessary, but just go with it. My eyebrow time is not included in the five minutes. Am I cheating? Maybe, but get over it… a girl’s gotta have eyebrows!

FACE

Powder Foundation: MAC Studio Fix in NC25

Bronzer: Benefit Hoola Bronzer (Review)

Blush: Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Dollface (Review)

Because I can’t be bothered with liquid foundation for 5 min makeup, powder foundation is a must! Hoola is my favorite bronzer and because there isn’t a lot going on with my eyes I like to use a pink blush to brighten up the rest of my face

EYES AND BROWS

Brow Pencil: Maybelline Brow Pencil in Blonde

Mascara: Cover Girl Lash Blast Volume in Brown

Eyeshadow: MAC Patina

Maybelline’s Brow Pencil is one that I’ve been using for years. It is the perfect color if you are blonde and because it is a hard pencil it has great staying power. MAC Patina is a very complex neutral eyeshadow that looks beautiful when worn by itself on the lid. I prefer brown mascara for 5 min makeup because I don’t wear eye liner and brown looks more natural.

LIPS

MAC Angel Lipstick

I think Angel is a no brainer. It looks gorgeous with Dollface and it doesn’t require a lip gloss or liner. (Review)

BRUSHES

Real Techniques Blush Brush — bronzer

MAC 168 — blush

MAC 217 — eyeshadow

Sorry they are dirty… I used them right before doing this post 🙂

St. Tropez Bronzing Mouse Self Tanner Review

To begin I thought I would tell you a little bit about my skin. I am very pale in the winter months (NC15) but tan fairly easily in the summer (NC25). Most of my teen years and early twenties I stayed very tan either from the sun or a tanning bed (NC30). Finally one day I woke up and realized how horrible this is for my skin and went to the other extreme. For the last three years I haven’t been in the sun without SPF50 and have remained around an NC15. This year I have decided to find a happy middle ground! I have been using an SPF50 on my face and SPF30 on the rest of my body and I’m around an NC20 right now. I apologize to all you ladies that aren’t familiar with MAC foundation colors…

I applied the Bronzing Mouse ($36) with the mitt that is sold separately ($6), which I highly recommend! I used two pumps per arm and three pumps per leg. You have to move pretty fast with this stuff to get an even application. It dries within a minute or so and you can immediately put your clothes on afterwards. It didn’t stain my clothing or sheets. It has a slight scent, but I don’t mind it… it’s not the typical self tanner smell. Each application darkens my skin about half a shade each time. If you want to maintain the color I recommend applying once a week.

When I originally purchased the product I was at my most fair and I wasn’t pleased with the result. I don’t think it will work well for those very fair skin — at least it didn’t on mine. The color was very strange and it didn’t look even. It is much easier to see application mistakes when you are that pale.

BUT once I got a little bit of a tan from laying poolside this baby worked like a charm! I’m not saying that everyone needs a tan before using self tanner… but I think that unless you naturally have a little bit of color to your skin, this self tanner will look odd.

My arm with some sun exposure, before St. Tropez. (I was slightly burnt so my skin looks splotchy)

Left: My arm after some sun exposure and one application of St Tropez; Right: My stomach with ZERO sun exposure or self tanner.

This is a bit frustrating because the purpose of self tanner is look like a bronzed goddess without the sun damage, but this product definitely didn’t work for me when I was alabaster white. I think the majority of women that have light and medium skin tones would love this though!

What is your favorite self tanner?

Urban Decay Mariposa Palette — Mini Review and Swatches

Rockstar, Gunmetal, Skimp, Infamous, Wreckage, Haight, Money, Mushroom, Spotlight, Limelight

I’ve had this palette for at least a year and never reviewed it… but while looking at the Urban Decay website I saw that this baby was still available and decided to do a mini review. It’s is VERY discounted on their website for only $12!!!

When I purchased it, I must admit, I was sucked in by two colors… Rockstar and Mushroom. And they did not disappoint! Here’s a little breakdown of all the shades.

ROCKSTAR — is a beautiful aubergine purple. The texture is beautiful — very smooth and pigmented.

GUNMETAL —  a dark gray with silver glitter. Nice texture but when applied to the eye, it is a bit lighter than in the pan. The color sheers out more than I expected. This shade is also in the Naked Palette.

SKIMP — pinky beige with a slight sheen. Skimp is a little powdery and a bit sheer. Not one I reach for.

INFAMOUS — bright fuchsia with a satin finish. This shadow is VERY dry and I found it difficult to get a good swatch.  Aside from that, the color is just not my taste whatsoever.

WRECKAGE — medium golden brown with golden shimmer. This one is beautiful! Very buttery and looks absolutely gorgeous when worn by itself on the lid. This one does have a lot of glitter and a fair amount of fallout, so beware!

HAIGHT — a frosty medium dark turquoise blue. I find this one to be a tiny bit dry… although the color is not something I would typically wear, I think it is a nice eyeshadow overall.

MONEY — a blue/green silver with a frost finish. Definitly a unique color, but I find this one to be overly frosty.

MUSHROOM — a dark frosty taupe. Definitely my favorite color of the palette and the main reason I purchased it to begin with. This eyeshadow is beautiful!!

SPOTLIGHT — a champagne bronze that has insane amounts of chunky glitter. The payoff is horrible and the fallout is unbearable.

LIMELIGHT — a coppery gold with gold shimmer and glitter. Dry texture and fallout from the depths of hell. This one reminded me of some of the really bad Lustre finish eyeshadows by MAC.

So is this palette worth it? Well for $12 I would say, oh yeah! One Urban Decay eyeshadow costs $18USD and this palette of 10 is quite a bit less.

HITS: Rockstar, Wreckage, Mushroom, Gunmetal

SO-SO’s: Haight, Money, Skimp

OH GOD NO’s: Limelight, Spotlight, Infamous

Do you have the Mariposa Palette? What is your favorite Urban Decay palette?
